While it’s not all about the Benjamins… so very much is about the Benjamins.
While a college education has never been more valuable, acquiring one has never been more expensive. The average total charges, including tuition and fees and room and board for in-state students at public four-year colleges and universities in 2007-2008, are $13,589. That’s just under $60,000 for a four-year degree, and college costs are rising an average of 6.6% per year. That’s a lot of Benjamins!
The Teen Masters is in pursuit of a very clear vision: To have the overall Teen Masters National Champion receive funding for his/her entire college education on national television! But our vision doesn’t end there. We envision building the Teen Masters’ annual scholarship awards to several hundred thousand dollars – annually helping hundreds of high school kids achieve their own version of the American dream by helping them to afford a college education!
The Teen Masters is also aware of the escalating financial burden faced by parents of aspiring youth bowlers. When the Teen Masters began in July of 1997, the only national event on the summer calendar was the Coca-Cola National Championships. A dozen years later, parents have the opportunity to spend the entire month of July traveling from one national event to another. We estimate that parents attending July’s myriad of bowling competitions spent in excess of $4 million dollars on travel, a number that doesn’t account for the unpaid vacation time taken.
It’s tough to say ‘no’ to your kids, and we don’t want you to have to. We believe any competition, whether in the form of the Teen Masters or other bowling events, that tests skill and character is valuable in preparing kids for life. While our primary focus will remain on generating scholarship awards, we are also looking for ways to help parents defray some of the expenses incurred in participating in Teen Masters competition.
Achieving such ambitious visions will not come easy, but we are passionate, tenacious, and determined to see them become reality! With your support, they will!!!
Raffles
Ebonite is facilitating raffles to be conducted at each Teen Masters regional qualifying events. The raffles will generate over $20,000 in additional scholarship awards at the national finals, and depending on the success of each raffle, will provide funds to offset a portion of the travel expenses of the athletes who advance from each respective qualifying event.
Magazine Sales
The Teen Masters has formed a partnership with Readers Digest to generate additional scholarship funds for the Teen Masters. For each magazine subscription or subscription renewal generated by the Teen Masters, Readers Digest will deposit 40% of the purchase price into the Teen Masters scholarship with the SMART.
Example: While the average American household subscribes to four magazines, mine subscribes to one, Real Simple. (Obviously, because I’m real simple – but also because I love to cook!) The newsstand price for Real Simple is $4.50 per issue, or $90 for 20 months. By purchasing the magazine through the Teen Masters online store, I’ll save 60% and pay only $36! That’s a great deal already, but here’s the real kicker – Readers Digest will deposit 40%, or $14.40, into the Teen Masters SMART scholarship account!
Imagine the possibilities: 2.5 million members of the USBC x only 1 magazine purchase each x $30 average subscription cost x 40% contribution by Readers Digest = $30,000,000 in Teen Masters scholarships – PER YEAR! (If only the bowling community could ever realize its full potential.) The good news is that we don’t need every USBC member to achieve our vision – we just need you, your family and friends!
